Encouraging News-Rutgers Prep student donates ceramic pots and vases to nursing home

When Steven Polansky first came to Rutgers Preparatory School in Franklin as a freshman, he signed up for ceramics class. Little did he know it would become a passion for him while also brightening the lives of area senior citizens.

Polansky, 17, has made so many pots and vases in the past four years that he did not know what to do with them all. He decided to donate them to the McCarrick Care Center, a nursing home in Somerset. One of Polansky's creations is on every table in the dining room, and every month he changes each of the 17 floral arrangements to coincide with the seasons or holidays. He makes sure to deliver them during lunchtime so he has a chance to talk with the residents there.

"It's something that makes the people happy," he said. "Some of them have no relatives living in the area. Knowing that someone cares enough to do this makes their life brighter."
