Yesterday I shared my childhood trauma about not being picked for playground teams.  The other side of that story was how different it was when we got back in the classroom.  When it became time to chose up teams for academic competition, I was always one of the first chosen.  The stars of the playing field were the ones who wanted to be on MY team because they recognized my gifts in math, spelling (those have faded a bit over time) etc.  What I understand now is that God planned it that way.  He didn't want me to be a star athlete--instead he gave me gifting that would be used in the classroom and later in the office.  That didn't make me any better or worse than my classmates, I was just made to have a different function.  We all have our gifts and places to use them.  Don't regret giftings you don't have, rejoice in the ones you do.

For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function,  so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.

I remember not being particularly gifted athletically in my youth (or ever, actually) and was one of the kids often not picked when it was time to chose teams for whatever sport was in season.  Although it obviously didn't ruin my life, I still remember how disappointing and embarrassing that was.  How great is it, then, to know that God has chosen me for his team!  Not only did he pick me, he promised that I would have the resources to fill the role that he has chosen for me--all I have to do is ask.  If you don't get that promotion, or get dumped by your significant other, remember that we are still chosen by our Heavenly Father, and therefore have great value and purpose in our lives.

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.

People suddenly thought he was brilliant!  It seems like Jesus took that approach; think of how man would act then do the opposite.  That explains today's scripture where we must act as a servant to be great.  That would be an oxymoron in the natural, but that's how Jesus Himself lived his life, and suffered His death.  We attain the greatest stature in heaven when we lower ourselves on earth to act as a humble servant, one willing to do anything to help our fellow man and glorify our Lord in the process.

 I really struggle with the concept of making myself stop and, as my wife Brenda loves to tell me, "be still!"  We can get so caught up in doing that we feel guilty when we take time for ourselves to relax and recharge.  Guess what--Jesus did just that during His ministry on earth.  Despite the relative brevity of his ministry, He knew His human body could not just keep going without stopping every now and then to rest and refresh.  That's right, the most powerful man to ever walk the earth needed quiet time.  In light of that, how can we think that we don't?  Let's make a better effort to give ourselves permission to rest.

Encouraging Words-A Different View of Giving Thanks

Given that today is Thanksgiving in the U.S., it only seems right to talk about giving thanks.  I want to take a different path than you might expect, however. 

It's a pretty standard thing for most of us to list our many blessings and praise the Lord for them on Thanksgiving, but this year, I'm choosing to focus on the most painful experiences of my life.  Several come to mind'; the desertion of my mother and me by my father, the failure of a business venture, and the deaths of my mother and wife.  I'm sure you could all come up with a similar short list.

Trust me, these were all devastating at the time they happened, and they still don't bring a warm fuzzy as I think of them right now.  I have learned that time does NOT heal all wounds, but it gives you a chance to understand their impact in your life.

My dad's sudden departure (a week after I graduated high school) was hurtful and brought great stress into our lives, but it also forced me to grow up a lot quicker than I probably would have otherwise.  The business failure almost ruined me financially, but I developed a greater respect for the business process, something that has subsequently helped my career get back on track.  Losing my mother was traumatic, but it gave me the freedom to finally grow into an independent adult and learn from mistakes I made on my own.  My wife Bette's passing was the most painful thing that has ever happened to me, but it drove me to my knees where I began the process of truly yielding my life to the Lord.

I would have avoided each of these events if I could, but I would have missed the blessings that came from my life being shaken up, from my path being radically changed.  Romans 8:28 can seem like a trite cliche, but I have lived it!  I bet many of you have too. 

During our Maryland Saints Fellowship meeting this past Sunday, we were discussing the concept stated in the 1 Thessalonians text when I brought up the positive things the Lord has brought into my life since Bette was promoted to heaven that probably would not have happened if she was still alive.  Apostle Dale said that, while he was deeply sorry for the pain I experienced, he was thankful that Bette has passed on so he and I could be in each others' lives and be engaged in ministry together.  I hadn't really thought of it from that perspective before, but the blessings that came out of the tragedies in my life have a scope beyond me, just as my life has been blessed with the joy of my marriage to Brenda that could come only after her previous marriage ended in divorce.

While I can never honestly say I am thankful for any of those events happening, I an deeply grateful and praise God for what He has done in my life as a result of them.  None of those wounds has ever completely healed, and they won't this side of heaven.  The Lord, however,  has provided blessings that I could first put beside the pain, then later to cover it, and eventually to put it in a box and sit it up on a shelf--it's there but not constant, not debilitating, because we have God's greatest weapon against pain and tragedy...

We all have some very bad things that have happened in our lives, perhaps some of them are still in the process of playing out.  We also have hope because God loves us so much he sent His son down to Earth to set the path for us to have eternal life and fellowship with Him.

Whatever is happening in your life this Thanksgiving, we can thank the Lord for His Son, and for the hope He gave us.

Isn't it rough to wake up and our first thought is of dreading something that lurks ahead that day, or regret something you did or didn't do last night?  We've all done it, and many of us still do.  Here's a different approach; let's start our day by praising the Lord (singing optional)?  Along with that, instead of ending the day filled with anger or disappointment thank the Lord for His faithfulness, even if we haven't really felt it during the course of that day?  By setting a tone of praise of thanksgiving, you'll likely find that you really do have plenty to be thankful for.  Let's all take time to do that today.  Happy Thanksgiving!

 Okay, everyone who enjoys the trials we go through in life raise your hands.  Hmmm, don't see many hands in the air.  Don't worry, mine isn't either.  I have learned, however, that they is an effective way to approach them.  Instead of lamenting (bible talk for whining) and crying out "Why me?!"  we can ask a better question--what do I need to learn from this?  As we persevere through a trial, we need to figure out how the Lord want to use it (He didn't cause it, but he will find a way to bless us through it) to cause us to grow or what does He want to teach us.  The most important lessons are usually learned through some challenge, some tribulation.  If we embrace that early on, that will only help us get the best out of a difficult situation.

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

I recently worked late and showed up at a fast food place that was supposed to be open until 9:00 PM.  It was still several minutes before 9 when I walked up to find the door locked and the two people already well into closing the place down looking at me in terror afraid that I would demand to be served.  As I returned to my car, I thought "with that attitude, that's the type of job you'll be stuck with."  Whether it's our job or our service to God, we need to approach it with our best effort, being faithful to that opportunity before we can expect to earn one greater.  As the Bible teaches us, nothing less than that reflects well on us, nor on our Lord.

A critical mistake many of us make it to evaluate the blessings we receive from God through the filter of the world--how do they measure up to what society thinks is worthwhile and valuable.  In today's scripture, Jesus tells us that is doesn't match up because it is so different.  We often think we need a happy marriage, good job, and comfortable wealth to have peace, but that's the world talking, not God.  That's how rich and powerful people can be so miserable and someone with a low-level job can be content.  God's peace is available to everyone, but it's an exclusive offer.  You can't find it anywhere else but through Him.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

I spoke yesterday about a cliche that is wrongly attributed to God.  Here's one that is correct-"It is more blessed to give than receive."  That gets to the core of the heart of Christ.  The most powerful man to ever walk the earth used that power to give to others.  He gave healing, knowledge, and most of all, He gave love.  I don't think you can do anything that more directly shows the love of Christ in your heart than to give to someone less fortunate than you, expecting nothing in return except the joy of helping a fellow human being.

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

Encouraging Words-"Give It And Get It. Got It?"

One person gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what they should give, and only suffers want. - Proverbs 11:24

My latest issue of Guitar Player magazine arrived in the mail just as the deadline for this issue drew near. Stuck to the front of the magazine was an advertisement informing me that giving a subscription to a lucky guitarist I know would be the "perfect gift."

The slogan on the ad was: "Give it and get it. Got it?"

Yes, I got it - but not in the way the magazine's editors might have hoped. For me the message was not about giving a gift subscription to a magazine, but about the larger message: If we give it, we get it. I got it.

The message of the passage from Proverbs took on a whole new depth for me. We all know the much parroted, but rarely followed line from the Prayer of St. Francis that tells us that "it is in giving that we receive," but we don't really "get it." Rarely do those words sink so deeply into our souls and hearts that we can't help but live them out.

When we really "get it" - when we understand that if we give freely we grow richer - or if we are stingy we will suffer - then generosity will be like breathing for us. Giving will be a reflexive action - an involuntary response to all the need around us. We really "get it" - that giving is what we have truly been born to do with our lives.

Lest anyone accuse me of preaching a prosperity gospel, let me say up front, when I say those who give freely get richer, I'm not talking about money, and neither is the author of Proverbs. The Hebrew word used here is yacaph, which simply means "to increase" or "to add." The passage tells us that whatever we give will increase - not just those who receive, but the giver as well.

 Have you ever heard someone use the phrase "God helps those who help themselves?"  Funny thing about that; (1) it's not in the Bible and (2) just the opposite is true.  God blesses those who help others.  I can personally testify to that.  I went through a spell in my life before I met Brenda where I wasn't giving much of anything to anyone and struggled mightily financially.  When Brenda and I married, we pledged to tithe regularly and give offerings when possible.  During that time, my salary has over doubled!  Coincidence?  Not really--that's scriptural.

Far too many preachers stand behind a pulpit and tries to scare people into heaven by threatening them with the wrath and condemnation of God if they don't give up their sinful ways.  That bothers me because it makes God sound like this angry parent who is just waiting for us to slip up so he can lower the boom on us.  That's NOT why He sent Jesus to earth.  He sent Jesus to save us through His death.  If God wanted to condemn us, He didn't need to go to all that trouble to have His son crucified--He could have just left us alone and we would have stumbled into that state easily enough ourselves.  No, God gave us Jesus to save us through His sacrifice, NOT to condemn us.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

How much would you have to love someone or something to willingly let your child suffer and die to save them?  That's hard to even imagine, isn't it?  Amazingly, the ultimate power in the universe, our God, did just that.  He sent His son Jesus to earth knowing He would be crucified, which is a particularly torturous way of executing someone.  God made that happen so Jesus' life would be held as a payment for our sins and give us a path to enter Heaven.  You don't have to understand how or why that works, just know that it does and that God loves you more than you can imagine.

God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.

Entertainers, politicians, and business leaders eventually find out how fickle public opinion is.  When it turns against them, many time they are devastated.  That's because they are drawing their affirmation, their strength, from the wrong source.  David faced that kind of situation when the families of his soldiers had been captured.  The troops didn't take that too well and held David responsible.  When the opinion of others soured on David, he knew where to turn--directly to the Lord, who gave him the strength to get back up and lead his troops in a successful raid to rescue their families.  People will turn on you--that's when you can turn to the Lord and gain a new strength in Him and from Him.

David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God.

Encouraging Stories-Marissa's Faith

There are times in life when, no matter what you believe, faith is a requirement. Trouble comes and the worst possible news threatens, but hope against hope prevails, transcending evidence or explanation.

For Trista Harris, faith has formed the basis of her life, and it was having her source of faith in God and the mystery of prayer that she believes completely healed her daughter of a life-threatening disease.

When Harris, a Fayette County resident, arrives to talk with her two little ones in tow, she holds a clipboard with typed sheets she’s titled “Marissa’s Faith.” The sheets chronicle a harrowing chain of events that have unfolded since this September in her 5-year-old daughter’s body. One bullet of bad news after another moves down the pages but, as with all stories, it doesn’t end until the last page is read.

Perhaps miraculously, life for the Harris family continues with what to others is a puzzling twist. Little Marissa, by all accounts of the physicians who examined her only weeks ago, should not be playing in the corner with her baby sister like she is today, as if nothing ever happened.

Being content with your station in life is not something that happens to you, it is a choice you make.  Wealth doesn't bring contentment because rich people so often try to get richer.  Relationships can seem to bring contentment until things start getting rough.  A good job can seem to bring contentment until the company is sold or the job is eliminated.  We can't count on circumstances to be content.  The Apostle Paul went through beatings, arrest, shipwrecks, hunger, etc. but made a decision to be content in the Lord through His strength.  I encourage you to make that same decision today.

for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Encouraging Stories-C. Falls woman follows God across continents

Joan Melrose, 71, of Columbia Heights remembers the pact she made with God after hearing his calling to do missionary work.
“I told God I’ll never beg,” she said. “I’ll share the vision God has given me. When the money quits, I quit.”

With her own money, she started on her missionary path in 1986 and continued with contributions from others inspired by her work. Melrose said she always had just enough to accomplish her missions, which included founding an international accredited nondenominational Bible college in Africa.

She built a campus in Bungoma, Kenya, and developed satellite schools across Kenya. Other institutions teach her curriculum in Uganda, Congo, Malawi, India and the United States.

Encouraging Stories-Of faith and football

When 12-year-old Christian Richardson was diagnosed recently with epilepsy, his parents had to pull him off his football team. Although discouraged, he found hope in a book his mother, Suzy Richardson, had just had published.

“For me, that hit home more than anything, to have my 12-year-old son read it and think ‘Well, if Tim Tebow can survive everything he went through before he even made it into this world, then I can push through this,’” she said.
 
Her book, “Gators for God,” features profiles of 12 former University of Florida football players who share their stories of faith and football and tell how the former has shaped their lives.

Encouraging Scripture-Giving thanks can make us thankful

We are what we speak. If we say something often enough, it can become part of what we believe and who we are.  What better way to test that theory than to be in a constant state of Thanksgiving.  If we get in the habit of starting our day by praising God, ending it with giving Him thanks for the events of the day (even those not particularly to our liking) and give a short praise to Him at times during the day, eventually that will become an ingrained habit in our normal daily routine.  The easy thing about this is that we don't have to look very hard for big and small things to give the Lord thanks for, we just need to take the initiative to actually thank Him!

Students can take many routes after graduation. While some may have jobs and internships lined up, others have taken up living among some of the most underprivileged neighborhoods of the nation.

Baylor 2010 graduate Juliet Brown decided to dedicate a year to serving an inner-city neighborhood in Chicago through a program called Mission Year.

Ashely Nienaber, a Mission Year recruiter, described the program as a year-long urban volunteer program that sends young people to live and serve in inner cities of the U.S.

"I believe that Jesus made it pretty clear in the Gospels that we are called to love the poor, and I don't think we were given that calling because that's what were supposed to do as good Christians. I really believe that command was given to us for our own good. I believe that God's heart is closest to the poor and the disadvantaged."

Encouraging Scripture-Who are we representing

When you're, at an event for your job, your school, or your church, you tend to be on your best behavior, don't you?  In these situations, you're conscious of representing something larger than yourself.  If you do something inappropriate, it reflects poorly not only on you but on the organization you represent.  We'd be a lot better off if we remembered that as we live our lives, we represent God.  Sometimes the only part of God someone will see is His reflection in us.  If we claim to walk with the Lord, we need to remember that we are His earthly representatives and live our lives accordingly so we don't give Him a bad name like so many other people have already done in today's society.

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do it as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Yolanda Atkins Cotton is a wife, mother and grandmother. She's also a former drug dealer, gang member and convict. That, however, was many years ago. Now, the Decatur woman uses her experience of life on the streets to reach those who are still living there.

While still in prison, Cotton says God began to touch her life, and she felt Him calling her toward some purpose. She just didn't know what it was. Then, one night sometime later, she had a dream. Cotton says, "I had on all this Army stuff, and I said, 'oh God, he's fixing to send me to the Army."

Instead, she came to understand that what God wanted was for her to be a soldier in the fight against poverty, addiction, homelessness and despair. Cotton found other women who had also struggled in their pasts and formed the Women of Completion ministry. "I call us His masterpiece. He took some junk and made something out of it," she says. Their mission is simple; to "let the people know you haven't done anything so bad that God won't forgive you, that God can't save you."

Sometimes I get very frustrated and angry with myself when I don't do something as well as I know I can, or I'm not as considerate of someone else as I could have been.  I hate feeling like I'm coming up short in the eyes of God, He who has blessed me so richly.  I need to remind myself of scriptures like Psalm 37:23.  He knows we will stumble, that we won't always do our best, and the Lord Himself is there to steady us.  By His hand, we will not fall.  We shouldn't treat our shortcomings as anything other than a little stumble, because that's how God is treating them.

The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall,  for the LORD upholds him with his hand.

Encouraging Stories-Faith Tabernacle strives to serve all of ‘God’s people’

The doors of Faith Tabernacle church home are open to homeless women, children and veterans.
In a separate location, Faith Tabernacle provides housing for homeless women, children and veterans and a drug abuse recovery program for the homeless veterans.

“We take care of all of God’s people,” said Bishop James L. Black, pastor. “We strongly advocate for those that are disenfranchised and poor and oftentimes helpless. Our priority is on seniors, women and children,”

On Sundays the congregation provides hot meals for senior citizens. The church also has a food pantry, and Black said the congregation has seen an increase in the number of homeless people with the downturn in the economy.

“The most impacted are women and children,” he said. “Women and children are suffering the most.”

Who can you trust?  I trust my wife Brenda, but she has and will let me down, as I have her.  I trust in my skills and abilities, but they have let me down.  Let's not even mention trusting in the government and the stability of the economy since it's too obvious neither can be counted on.  I trust myself, but I've let myself down.  So then, who can you trust that will never let you down and never leave you?  God.  Sure, sometimes we don't feel Him there
and we can get disappointed when our prayers are not answered on our timetable, but He is the one constant in the universe, and He loves us.  Trust it.  Trust Him.

Encouraging Stories-Singer-comedian uses rescue story to encourage others

Don Wharton has traveled full time for 31 years as a singer, songwriter, comedian and "encourager."

The core of Wharton's performances is a retelling of the story of his unlikely rescue from an icy Bering Sea following a plane crash on Aug. 13, 1993.

The seven passengers of a twin-engine Navajo plane all survived more than 35 minutes in 36-degree water near Nome, Alaska. The group was returning from a missionary and humanitarian aid trip to Russia when one engine, then the second, failed.

Wharton is coming to Zion Lutheran Church in Bismarck to perform on Wednesday. Wharton, who lives in Fort Wayne, Ind., said he has found a real niche with Lutheran churches, having been raised as a Lutheran and attended Lutheran schools. He does about 100 shows a year and on this swing will perform in cities in the Dakotas and Montana before heading south.

"A lot of the stuff I do is based on encouragement, in (people's) faith life, their family life and their daily life," he said by phone on Thursday.

Encouraging Scripture-Forgive and be forgiven

Forgiving can be a very hard thing to do.  I don't mean the cursory "I forgive you," we may say to someone, I mean to really, really forgive them in your heart.  That's where God looks.  He doesn't check transcripts of what you've said and done, He looks inside of you to see what you really believe.  If you harbor unforgiveness, Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount that He would withhold forgiveness from you.  That's very heavy folks and a place we don't want to be.  Some of you have been very deeply hurt, wounded, and abused in your lives, but remember what Jesus went through so you could receive God's forgiveness.  What we have to deal with to forgive someone is not as tough by comparison.  The peace and the feeling of the weight lifted from us is so worth it!

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Encouraging Stories-Travelling preacher on walk across country

Greg Benner might be nuts. Or just another prophet of God. Maybe he's both.

To decide for yourself, you will need to walk a mile or two with him. But take heed - he walks a lot.

The 54-year-old Yakima, Wash. resident and Christian preacher is trekking across the country to inspire folks to follow their dreams, and to encourage churches to minister more effectively to the downtrodden.

His adventure to Jacksonville, Fla. started in Santa Monica. It led him last week into the Inland Empire.

On Thursday he walked through Mentone and into Yucaipa, where he took time out to talk under a burning November sun about following Christ and influencing people.

"There needs to be more cigarette butts and beer bottles and stuff laying out in parking lots of churches, because that means the people that need help are coming," he said. "And if we're not seeing that stuff and everything is all pristine, then it's because we've made ourselves unapproachable."

We all know people who go through life with the victim mentality, where they act as if life happens to them and they have no control.  I've also seen people use this as an excuse to not take responsibility for decisions they make. acting as if they have no real choices to make.  God did not create us to be victims, and we assume that role only if we decide to do so.  The Lord has made us for His light to shine upon us and His glory to be reflected from us.  When we allow ourselves to be victims, we forfeit those blessings.  Which would you rather be, a victim or the highly favored child of God?  It's your choice to make.

Encouraging Stories-Community comes to aid of local teacher

Less than three weeks after a fire destroyed everything she owned, preschool teacher Shel Bruce and her son have been the beneficiaries of an outpouring of community support.

Bruce, an instructor at Annsworth Academy, a private preschool in Killearn, said her main concern was the safety of her son when a fire broke out at her mobile home on Kidd Thomas Lane on Oct. 7.


Travis Oaks, spokesman for the Tallahassee Fire Department, said the fire started in the kitchen and by the time
firefighters arrived the home was engulfed in flames.

Stedman Bruce, 19, was inside the house when the fire broke out, and he made it out safely.

Oaks said the value of the home was $35,000, and the damage caused by the fire was estimated between $25,000 and $30,000.

Bruce said she is often asked by others how she could be so strong and still keep standing.


"It's God's grace, and it's the prayer of people. They are the ones who make me strong," she said. "Their hugs, words of encouragement and just being there helps so much words cannot describe.

Encouraging Stories-Christian Women's Job Corps Puts Participants In Driver's Seat

Since 1999, a local nonprofit organization ministry has served as God's vineyard, bringing together workers with servant hearts who are bearing fruit in the community.

The Fort Smith Christian Women's Job Corps, one of more than 200 sites across the nation, has flourished as it provides a Christian context in which women in need are equipped for life and employment, according to Valerie Fitch, site coordinator.

Fitch explained that the nonprofit organization assesses the needs and long-term goals of each participant agreeing with a covenant, then matches them with a volunteer mentor for encouragement, one-on-one Bible study and the ability to reach specified long-term goals and dreams - all the while growing in faith throughout the process.

"The process is more important than the achievement," explained Fitch, who started with FSCWJC as a volunteer mentor in its first year.

I've heard so many stories of peole responding to hearing about Jesus by saying what a rotten person they've been and how God couldn't possible forgive them.  They are convinced they are too bad a person for God to forgive and love.  That is absolutely not true, and the verse from 1 John is but one example proving it isn't true.  We are always off track when we limit God's power, especially when it relates to His love for us.  He wants to forgive us, and He will...if we ask.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Encouraging Stories-Flushing man knows how important it is to never give up

Greg Cassels is a man with many stories to share.

The 59-year-old Flushing resident could tell you about growing up in a broken, abusive home and not discovering who his real father was until just this past year. He could recount the struggle of being an alcoholic, a journey that started at the age of 9 when he picked up his first drink.

He can speak first-hand about run-ins with the law and the transition from Flint Public Schools to the boys training school he was sent to. He could wade through the memories and experiences of four marriages and nearly two decades of trying to work full time and attend classes to earn a college degree.

But he won’t. Instead, Cassels will tell you about the contentment he’s found, the God he’s embraced, the people who’ve inspired him and the milestones he’s reached.

“The stories can go on and on, but I lead a pretty good life now and I’m happy with it,” the Caro native said. “It’s been an interesting life, but I have peace about it.”

After Tuesday's election results, some of you are happy, others sad.  Some feel that your views were vindicated, others feel that your hopes have been crushed.

It's hard for me to get away from election day and it's consequences working three blocks from the White House and working for an organization that provides assistance with elections around the world..  Yeah, it was a big deal, and my co-workers ran the entire gamut of emotions Wednesday morning

What struck me as I witnessed this and led me back to these scripture references from Craig Groeschel's book "Dare to Drop the Pose" was the sanctimonious piety of some on the winning side and the anger and hostility from some on the losing side.  It didn't strike me as much better than a two-year old taunting another child when he got candy and they didn't, or having a tantrum when he didn't get the candy.

God has not only shown us a better way, he has commanded us to take it! 

As we watched news analysis Tuesday night, Brenda and I were reminded how civil discussion and debate are a lost art in our society, with people intensely focused on their selfish ambition and conceit, pushing to raise their status above others.  God has shown us a better way! 

We can all learn something from those we disagree with.  Instead of focusing on our differences, God wants us to humbly reach out and seek common ground, establishing mutual understanding and respect.  That is a must to have any sustained cooperation, where we can build something from everyone's different gifts that can be greater than we can be on our own.

Even two heroes of our faith, Peter and John, were jockeying for position in heaven, wanting to know how they could have the seat at the right hand of God.  Self-interest is natural to our flesh, but the infilling of the Holy Spirit allows us to move beyond ourselves. 

I encourage all of us to be intentional about approaching our relationships with the same mindset that Jesus had. Let's not get caught up in arguments about our differences.  Let's take the initiative to find common ground and use that as a basis to do some good.  For example, if you are gay and know someone who is not accepting of that, perhaps you can still work together to help feed needy hungry people in your area.  Instead of being defined by issues, perhaps you can move into a relationship where you are both defined by your love for Christ.  Let's not emulate the partisan rancor of politicians.  Let's show them a better way.

If bothers me when Christians seem to be looking to pick a fight.  As soon as there is any perceived slight, they run to the media or a lawyer while claiming the moral high ground.  That is NOT scriptural.  We are told to make every effort to live in peace.  We need to demonstrate holiness, which is hard to do while ranting on TV or standing in a courtroom.  Instead of focusing on their need to obtain justice for being wronged, they need to focus on how Jesus would handle it.  Since he went to the cross without calling a press conference of retaining a lawyer, maybe folks need to consider a different approach.

Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.

Encouraging Stories-Boxing Ministry Reaches Out to Urban Kids

Rattling speed bags and swishing jump ropes are not the sounds a person expects to hear at a Christian ministry, but some inner-city boys from Philadelphia are taking advantage of one of the freshest ideas in ministry right now.

Rock Ministries of Philadelphia is a boxing gym in the ghetto of Philly that offers free training in boxing and weightlifting to young men, if they attend a weekly Bible study.

Buddy Osborne, director of the program, has a history just like the boys he is trying to help. Raised by his single mother, along with eight other siblings, he had a remarkable career in boxing, eventually representing the U.S. in international competition. Then at the age of twenty-six, Osborne did a stint in prison for racketeering.

After he was released from prison, Osborne found Christ and became involved in inner-city missions. Eventually he developed Rock Ministries. He knew firsthand the appeal that a gym would have to a poor boy trying to "tough out" his hard life. His ministry has expanded into a truly great work.

It's okay to doubt.  I've sat through sermons where the preacher was screaming at us about how sinful doubt is, but Jesus didn't cast anyone away for doubting.  He did miracles during his earthly ministry to help us overcome that doubt, and He still does them today through the Holy Spirit.  It's not just miracles, though.  It's through His word, through all of the little things He blesses us with during the normal course of the day.  Doubt can also help us grow in Him, to gain a better understanding of how God works and who He really is.  Go ahead and doubt, but lean into the Lord so He can help you move beyond it.

When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has he been like this?"

Encouraging Stories-Colby man writes of youth with disability

Diagnosed with a hearing impairment at age 6, Matthew Ludwick strove for years to conceal his disability as he "just kept trying every day."

The Colby resident now has decided to share his story in the hope of encouraging other individuals struggling with disabilities or young people facing bullying.

"I don't want people calling me, saying 'Man, you've had a really rough life,' " Ludwick said. "I want them to say, 'This has really opened my eyes. This has really helped me understand people with disabilities.' That's the purpose of it."

His first book, "Can you hear what I hear?" was released Sept. 28. Since then, Ludwick -- who coaches middle school and high school sports and works for his church -- has been busy traveling to promote the book and speaking at seminars. Events are planned throughout the United States and Canada, he said.

Faith, he said, is a large part of his story, and he said the project was inspired by God.

"I didn't have anywhere to go," he said. "I was in junior high, and I was dragging bottom. I asked God in my heart ... and Jesus was my best friend."

I've been struggling with things at my job recently, getting worn down, frustrated, and discouraged.  Yet every morning I've found the strength to get up and do it again.  I haven't trudged into work and gone through the motions, hoping the ceiling doesn't fall in, though.  I've gone expectant that something good will happen in a new day because the Lord is with me in the office the same way He is with me every step I take in my life.  I won't give in and give up because the Lord never fails!

I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall.  I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Encouraging Stories-St. John converts theater into closet, pantry, clinic

When St. John United Methodist Church needed a name for its new ministry building, they chose The Stith Mead House. Not project, or building, but house.

In that house, the church and community ministries collaborated to relocate a health clinic serving the poor and uninsured, open a clothing closet, and provide free rent to a food bank.

The house was consecrated and its name unveiled in a service at the church Wednesday night.
In the two years since St. John bought the old Augusta Mini Theatre on Eighth Street, renovations have turned old office space and dance studios into a community center.

The building now houses the food pantry of the Downtown Cooperative Church Ministries, the St. Vincent DePaul Health Clinic, and a clothing closet, which will open Tuesday.

"The community can come for food, clothing, medical care in one stop." said Gloria Hamilton, the church's administrator.

Whoever coined the phrase "sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me" just didn't get it.  It's a lot easier to heal after a physical beating than it is an emotional one.  I can still remember hurtful words from my childhood, and their memory still hurts today!  We can inflict a lot of damage with our big mouths, to ourselves (if you call yourself a loser often enough, you soon will be one!) and others.  We can also build ourselves and others up.  Jesus set the example of encouraging those who were downtrodden while religous leaders put them down.  We can do likewise and make a huge difference in someone's life, starting with our own.

Words can bring death or life! Talk too much, and you will eat everything you say.

Encouraging Stories-Students form charitable group

You would be hard-pressed to find a rummage sale with a greater cause than the one held at First United Methodist Church Saturday.

The event raised funds for Doulos, a club of wonderful, caring teenagers at Joplin High School.

While current members of Doulos prefer to remain anonymous, two former members, who are now in college, are Tamara Zajac and Cody Washburn.

 Zajac, who started the club in 2009, is in her first year at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City.

The idea for Doulos (a Greek word meaning “servant”) originated from an African mission trip that Zajac went on as a JHS junior. After working at an orphanage for a week in Kitale, Kenya, she said that God did such a work in her that she wanted to do something for others when she returned.

“I thought a lot about my trip to Africa and God really put on my heart that I didn’t just want to ‘get through’ high school,” she said. “I wanted to make an impact for Christ. I wanted to make a difference in that huge place.”

Zajac then talked to one of her teachers about starting a club that would raise awareness and money for orphans in Africa.

I'm a big believer in education, but all the education in the world won't help you if you don't have the wisdom of the Lord.  It's no big mystery, he gave us the Bible and fills believers with the Holy Spirit to teach us His word and how to apply it to our lives.  Even knowing the Bible inside out doesn't mean much if you aren't able to apply its teachings to your life, and share it with others so they can apply it to their lives. 

Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach, for it is pleasing then you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips. So that your trust may be in the LORD, I teach you today, even you.
